This came from the frustration I experience with one of the staff members at Northeastern Illinois University. He often seems to be impatient with me. One day, I tried to report an incident, but he simply waved me away, refusing to communicate with me through the method I am used to: note writing. I became very upset because I have been dealing with this type of situation too many times. After crying to my mother, she simply told me that he wasn't aware and was probably intimidated by something that he doesn't understand. She reminded me that I was a very strong-willed deaf black woman who isn't afraid to speak her mind and that often scares people. That day I stopped feeling like a burden and became an asset.
